Game Information:
The intensity of just playing through the demo level of Call of Duty left us shell-
shocked and eager for more. This squad-based game from Infinity Ward--
consisting of some of the minds behind Medal of Honor: Allied Assault--
faithfully reproduces many of the most harrowing battles of WWII while at the
same time easing the gamer into the subtle nuances of playing as a squad
member.
Unlike other squad-based games, this squad never leaves you and seems to
always know just what you need. If you don't immediately dash into combat,
our squad will lay down suppressing fire for you, taking your lead and engaging
enemies as you flow from objective to objective in an often seamless and highly
addictive fashion. The other squad members aren't under your direct control,
but they'll do what the situation requires in an intelligent manner.
But the same goes for the enemy: you can't go walking into an open courtyard
and expect to emerge without a few bullet holes poked in you. You have to
think before acting a lot of the time, because you know that the soldier on the
other side of the rubble wall definitely is.
Call of Duty's movement interface lets you crouch or go prone, slowing your
movement some, but making it more difficult to take a hit. It's one of the few
times you have to hit any key other than to move, look, and fire, which adds to
the frenetic pace of the game.
The 24 single-player levels feature many actual battles from WWII, including
the obligatory D-Day landing, the Russian Charge at Stalingrad, and the Battle
for Berlin. Although mostly linear, they appear gorgeously open-ended, with
expansive skies filled with mortar explosions and anti-aircraft fire, excellent
weather effects, and realistic character animations.
During the single-player game, you'll play from three different perspectives--
Russian, American, and British--with each campaign taking place in a different
area of Europe. You'll start the game as an American D-Day paratrooper then
progress to a British Special Forces soldier and finish off as a Russian tank
commander.
The multiplayer side of Call of Duty features a dozen maps with five different
modes of play, from standard deathmatch to Counter-Strike-esque objective
modes that pit an offensive team against a defense. There's also a unique
multiplayer feature called the Kill Cam, which lets you see the last five seconds
of your character's life from the point-of-view of the guy who took you down--so
you can learn from your mistakes or make sure that no one else is playing
unfairly.
There are a wide variety of WWII-era weapons to use in both single- and
multiplayer, including rifles, submachine guns, pistols, and grenades. You can
aim down the weapon's sight for greater accuracy, and use them as
bludgeoning melee weapons as well.
